c4eva Speaks! Mega Puzzle Mashup Contest -- Win a Lite-On iHAS524B! (May 30, 2012 - June 27, 2012)It's contest time again! Up for grabs is a brand new Lite-On iHAS524B that's fully compatible with c4eva's iXtreme Burner MAX firmware!

We came up with our own twist once again — this time mashing together several different puzzle styles for a unique challenge. 14 secret words are being revealed over 21 days through a logo hunt, with each one fitting into a crossword puzzle. 14 special letters from the completed crossword then form the final mystery phrase!

You live busy lives, and we understand that, so we chose 36-hour intervals for the secret word reveals instead of 24, to give everyone a reasonable chance at catching the words. On average, it should only take approximately 5 minutes of your time to find each secret word and submit it.

The first secret word will be revealed May 30, 2012 02:00AM UTC.

Good luck!

Instructions

The contest begins May 30, 2012 02:00AM UTC and ends June 27, 2012 02:00AM UTC.

Every 36 hours, a new secret word will be revealed somewhere in the posts on the first 20 pages, starting from the front page. The secret word will appear only in the actual post content, not in the comments, so you do not need to go through pages of comments searching. You can search for the secret word one page at a time, by going through the first 20 pages using the page toolbar at the bottom:

Pagination

or optionally one post at a time by using the previous/next buttons at the bottom of each post:

Previous/Next Post Navigation

After 36 hours, the secret word will disappear and the next secret word will be revealed on another page. We suggest that you be logged into your account when searching for the words, as users who are not signed-in may see cached pages.

Secret words are marked with the stylized "c" from our logo to the right of it, such as:

[2011-03-04 09:21PM UTC] <c4eva> The Emperor has made a critical error and the time for our attack c4evaSpeaks! has come! :)

In this example, the secret word is "attack" because the "c" appears to the right of it.

You must find the secret words within the 36-hour time period that each is visible.

In the same 36-hour period, you must also submit a comment, containing only the secret word, on this contest post. Do not submit the comment on the post where you find the secret word.

The comments with your answers are treated specially, and are only visible to yourself and to the Admins of c4eva Speaks. Other users will not be able to see your answers.

If you've printed out the Crossword & Mystery Phrase PDF document, you can fill in each secret word as you find them.

Any participants that do not post a comment with the secret word every 36 hours will be disqualified.

On June 18, 2012 02:00PM (14:00) UTC, the 14th and final secret secret word will be revealed for 36 hours, allowing you to finish the crossword and complete the mystery phrase.

At this point, you must submit a comment with the final secret word, and another comment with the mystery phrase.

The final secret word must be submitted in the 36-hour period that it's visible. The mystery phrase can be submitted at the same time, or anytime thereafter up until June 27, 2012 02:00AM (02:00) UTC when the contest closes.

I'm considering writing a script to find the image as a coding exercise. (No, I will not be distributing it.) A couple of questions:

    1. Is the second part of the name of the "secret word" image (c4evaspeaks-lhsw.png) randomly-generated, or will it remain the same throughout the contest?

    2. Will the image always appear directly after the secret word with no space?

    3. Is the image posted at exactly 0200UTC via a script, or is it posted manually?

    Thanks for your time!

I understand your motivation from a learning standpoint, and I appreciate that you won't distribute it. I'm no stranger to complex parsing & automation, or exploiting contests for that matter ;) , so I get the appeal.

I don't have a problem with people scripting it — in fact, it's to be expected that at least one or more persons will, which is why I took that into account when designing the contest. Even if script-assisted, it still maintains a fairly even playing field as far as finding and submitting the answers on time, and requiring some manual intervention in determining the mystery phrase.

I don't consider it cheating as I know from experience that it does take a degree of time, effort, and ingenuity to script these sorts of things. I see it as a there being a defined set of rules and an end goal, and how you get to that goal is up to you — "creative problem solving" is always a good thing. As long as you don't give out the answers to others or publish your script, I'm totally fine with it.

Even if I said no, frankly, there's no way to outright prevent it, at least not without directly affecting the accessibility of the contest. There are several ways to thwart cURL and other typical methods, but going to extremes such as using JavaScript to inject it into the DOM may limit the platforms and browsers that would be able to render it properly, and thereby limit the number of people who could participate. The more people that can enjoy it, the better, so I'm OK with the trade-off. That's not to say I didn't throw in a few small hurdles to make it slightly more challenging though to anyone going that route. It's nothing elaborate, but it added a bit of fun to the process on my end.

I'm opting not to answer question 1 or 2 in the interest of leaving it up to you to discover when the time comes, else that takes some of the fun and challenge out of it. As for question 3 — the changeover between secret words is automatic, and happens exactly at the times listed.

I'd like to appeal to anyone that does plan to script it, that you set your script to run (or manually trigger it) not exactly at, but shortly after the scheduled changeover times listed in the post, then you should have no reason to run it more than once per 36-hour interval. That will help account for possible slight differences in time between our server and your local time/you server time, and will avoid bogging-down our server with unnecessary requests. I ask that you please respect and adhere to this request. I will be keeping an eye on the access logs during the contest, and it's relatively easy to spot those making excessive requests in rapid succession and multiple times over the interval.

For any of you that do take a run at scripting it, I'd be interested to hear afterwards of your creative methods if you feel like sharing. Perhaps a tad ironic, but I'll most likely script it as well, but obviously just for fun.

Everyone can fill in the puzzle — it's part of what you have to do! The winner is drawn from those who have followed all the steps and posted their answers along the way and have found the mystery phrase at the end.

Thank you for your question. You need only search through the first 20 pages of posts beginning from the front page, or optionally post-by-post using the previous/next buttons at the bottom of individual posts if you wish to do it that way. The secret word will appear only in the actual post content, not in the comments. I've updated the instructions section of the post to clarify that.
