I’m not saying ALL Hitachi 78/79′s don’t perform the AP25 checks, so don’t take everything I say regarding my specific drive as the defacto truth universally. The best and safest way to test your drives capability (if you haven’t already determined it) would be the method I did when Quick and I were beginning our investigation of sorts regarding these drives.

Quick is also very knowledgeable about the subject you speak of and I would concur with his analysis. If you can, I would try running KProbe on your XGD3 discs that won’t play. I would bet they all have incredibly high PIF and Pi spikes which would lead to being unable to play them (not in ALL cases, but in most that I’ve come across).

Quick is also correct in that these XGD3′s are utilizing the very outer edge of the discs (which are never, ever used under any circumstance I can think of until Burner MAX Firmware allowed us to do it) so the outer edge of cheaper brand media (and even some Verbatim, unfortunately there’s no guarantees) are generally less reliable because the manufactures know that a typical burner firmware is incapable of burning that far to the edge so quality control beyond a certain point goes down significantly. Run the ISO through Abgx to patch/fix anything first, which I’m sure you are already doing but I thought I’d throw it in there. I use Verbatim MKM001 Singapore discs, all the EEPROM options on (HT, Online HT, OverSpeed, OPC on) and clear my OPC history before each burn then burn at 4x. I don’t bother with verifying my discs via ImgBurn with XGD3′s, I found that using KProbe2 and following the guidelines have shown me proven results first-hand. Hope this helps m8!
