some people have been saying in the comments pages that one of the 147xx updates changed the fan speed for some xboxes. i figured i’d post here so people with xenon’s would have a heads up to do a fan mod or something to decrease their likelihood of RROD. if anyone has made any comparisons of the noise level or voltage to the fans before and after updating, maybe you could share that here. also seems likely that the fan speed setting would be somewhere stored in the dash files if anyone is familiar with browsing that data.

This actually makes sense before the update my elite was running bf3 perfect….. But since the update it seems to chug alot and randomly freeze.
I mean it has done in the past (freeze) but grouped with chugging and an increasing hot smell when i lean in to change disc.
You could be onto something here if they were to “kill” older 360′s it will open the market and force us to buy the newer unmoddable slims therefore making money and “defeating” piracy for a little while.

But seriously would they stoop that low after the RROD spree…….

It Is Microsoft so maybe

Also i should add im not sure which mobo i have i only deal with drive mods so never bothered with board revisions, if i knew how to tell i’d let ya’s know and i could get some voltages from fans but wont have anything to compare them to as i’ve updated already.

i sacrificed a xenon on dash 7371 (measuring about 5.05 volts, by my meter-of-multiple-uses). 13599, 14699, 14717, and 14719 all gave me the same result, 5.05 volts. sorry to the people who got rrod, it’s always bad news to hear, but i don’t think it’s reasonable to blame the updates for this. glad i could get to the bottom of this for you all.

UPDATE: i was unaware of how the temperature settings in the nand worked until recently. apparently xenons DID get their temperature threshold raised, which would mean that the fans don’t speed up until the xbox gets hotter than before. unfortunately it wasn’t made too clear what dash versions the change actually occurred. here are the results for people who don’t have an account at the link posted below. i would think that 14699 would be “b4″ and 14719 would be “after”, so i will post again when they clear up what they meant. in the meantime i will double check my nand dumps to see if any other motherboard revisions had their temps changed.

“b4-14719.jpg” 80 97 100, 100 110 117
“after-14699.jpg” 80 75 78, 100 100 102
meaning: fan speed increased at:(CPU, GPU, RAM), xbox shuts off at:(CPU, GPU, RAM) in degrees celcius.

reply from David Watters (one who posted nand dumps): “the first is a 7xxx dash and the second is a 14717 and i se that now my bad ya the thermal setting has lowered i havent had a chance to calculate the gain and offset changes”

so if i read that correctly, they actually lowered the temps, which would be a good thing.
