But anchoring Souled Out are Aiko’s advancing command of her instrument and a more daring approach to melody. In the years since their inception, they’ve become one of heavy music’s rising stars, with much-chattered about performances at Roadburn, Desertfest and Psycho Las Vegas. The record can get a little samey at times, though in a hypnotic kind of manner, but is certainly engrossing at its finest moments such as early highlight Dear Lucifer, which is definitely one that will stick in many heads once they hear it. Since their beginnings, their three-man line-up has been unchanged; guitarist-vocalist Thomas V Jager, drummer Esben Willems, and bassist Mika Hakki. Throughout the album, the predominant voice heard is hers; barring some choice backing vocals from songwriter to the stars James Fauntleroy, the lone celebrity guest spot is a bottom of the ninth appearance from Common on the album closer “Pretty Bird (Freestyle)”. The band are clearly skilled at making the long track format work, but there is an unfortunate side-effect here where most of what came before, except Dear Lucifer whose title line will still be repeating in your head at that point, is eclipsed by them. His involvement marked the first time the band worked with an outsider in the studio, leading the group to briefly comment. No Comfort elevates MONOLORD from one of the underground’s best bands to true leaders of the genre. The band are clearly skilled at making the long track format work, but there is an unfortunate side-effect here where most of what came before, except Dear Lucifer whose title line will still be repeating in your head at that point, is eclipsed by them.
