Xbox LIVE Dashboard Update 2.0.16202.0 Rolling Out

Microsoft has begun rolling out a new SystemUpdate that brings the Xbox 360 dashboard/kernel version to 2.0.16202.0.

Backups continue to work fine on LT+ v3.0, LTU v1.0, and xk3y offline and on LIVE. [Admin note: LT v2.01 and LT+ v2.0/v2.0b are fine as well!]

Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson (Larry Hryb) posted this about the update:

"In this update, we are correcting some issues such as displaying the incorrect playlist name when launching a playlist from Xbox SmartGlass to the console, an error with Xbox Video closed-captioning and an error with Xbox Music that some were experiencing."

I haven't flashed back to stock in ages. But Microsoft banned me with the recent Halo 4 banwave… so my guess is they aren't gonna bother trying to ban someone just for having LT+ on their drives, or they would have done it a long time ago. I might start hating Microsoft if they banned me for having LT+, but I knew exactly what I did wrong with the Halo 4 ban, so I don't hate them at all for that. It was my own stupidity logging into my LIVE account with pre-release date achievements. People who got used xbox 360's from pawn shops and don't even know they have LT+ would get hit by this kind of ban, and that would make a lot of people hate them, and we'd go buy a Wii-U instead of a new 360…

Definately got a lucky break with that one lol! How'd you find the kamikaze hack by the way… and did you use a template kit or just take a lucky gamble?

it's not like he isn't going to have future updates to deal with on his own.

No, but it saved the guy who flashed it in the first place from having to take it back a couple of days later because of the update and to flash it back to stock then flash it to LT+ again! That was his point lol, so his timing was lucky – saved himself the extra work!

Hit US same time as UK so am assuming this one isn't a staggered rollout like they normally do.
I received the update (North East England) within 10 seconds of my buddy (Texas USA).

System's seem to be updating fine, done seven systems so far in various ways and the only issue i noted in one Xbox 360 phat console so far was that it was unable to update (Error E66) because the system had a replacement Benq drive programmed with the systems correct drive key instead of the original factory-fitted Lite-on, so conclusion would be it is checking the OSIG of the drives during update and gave the E66 error as the OSIG was not what the system expected. Spoofed the Benq drive with a Liteon OSIG and it installed fine.
So far, no other update issues observed…

To be honest, i've never needed to look into this further on past updates. As a rule i return the drives to stock before an update anyway, but some of the consoles i have done for people they have chosen not to do that and update regardless, but this one came back to me – E66 error on this update. The guy ran it through other updates without needing me to return it to stock for the process but this time he couldn't get away with it, so it seems it's checking OSIG during the update process.

This means that way which allow to launch games that were writed on 97%, will not work anymore?

    • avatar CombatTOAD says:

yeah that raised my suspicions too lol… it's just a polite and discreet way of saying "yes, we've finally stumped those who were getting truncated backups to load again using the music player vunerability".
I don't use truncated backups so am unable to test that theory but i can easily see them doing such a thing: Note how they couldn't trust the AP2.5 fail flags to ban consoles anymore because of previous false-positives so in update 15574 any systems with an X value that contained a failed AP2.5 flag was issued a new X value and the sec data then shows as clean – well that could only have been done so from then on any further AP2.5 fail flags can now be trusted and acted upon, given them room to console ban systems again for such reasons. I had several systems that only had one or two flags on and were still working on Live that 15574 gave new clean X values too: i'm going to flag one up again to prove a point because i expect after getting new flags it will shortly get banned whereas the other of the two systems will remain ok. Time will tell. They have to try and do something to stop backup and piracy use and if detecting truncated discs is an easy way for them to do such then we have to expect them to start to act on it…

Anyway, people should know by now that truncating isn't Live-safe. It's a shame there are still outdated guides floating about claiming that's "how to burn XGD3 games correctly" hence why many people still truncate discs in ignorance, simply because thats how the guide said to do them! lol.

Anyway, as usual it's still all hear-say, theories, and nothing confirmed, but makes for good discussion all the same.

    • My m8 always updates his console without going back to stock fw, he's been doing this since the Xbox flashed a new fw onto during a update. (can't remember dash no#l) also he's such a cheap skate that he truncates all his games, he's playing assasins creed 3 truncated and blak ops 2 truncated and hitman truncated, all work fine online, plus he's NEVER had to do the music player trick to get 97% to load, as load ok. (obviously this is not the safest way ihas-burner all the way for the pro modder)
I'm not saying update anyway without returning to stock, but one of these days these people might get caught out (when a new fw incorporated into a update is released) again totally down to the individual – best advice wait for a m8 to do his Xbox before you bust your own one! Or wait for C4evas live log (not much of a wait)

With a console ban i'd obviously assume the console serial number and console id are then barred from Live servers but can you go and recover the main GamerTag account involved with that system on a replacement console?
Or will the GamerTag associated with that console be barred aswell?
Do the harddrives etc still corrupt?

Would love to hear what the exact result is from a console ban from someone who has had this happen recently… always best to know all of the risks lmao!

that everyone is too lazy to do that so people are just updating while on Lt+3.0 (most of them)

however until C4eva's Live log no one can determine which if this update is safe !!

That would NEVER happen. For them to ban a console they have to have good reason to believe the terms of service etc have been violated. They couldn't mark someone's console for ban just because they happened to perform the update the same day it got mentioned on a firmware website such as c4evaspeaks.com. It's ludicrous lol, it would be absolute chaos and bombarment of complaints from innocent users if they did do such a thing. Something so coincidental just wouldn't stand.
So i'm afraid your idea is not practical for them whatsoever. A very curious mind you do have lol… just becareful the evil teddies under the bed don't poison your cornflakes at breakfast time ;-)

      • avatar Answer to the answers! says:

Well I didn't mean that they will ban you after that, I meant that they might put a mark on the record of that console and put another mark for another update and another one for something else that they might think the terms of service have been violated for, until console reach a specific number of marks witch is will make it very suspicious console to them and then ban it!! I know it might sound complicated but it's not very far from true. ;)

        Reply | Reply with Quote
        • avatar CombatTOAD says:

i imagine various things can contribute to their decision to ban a console, but if anything it would more likely be things such as say a UK GamerTag associated to a PAL system having NTSC titles in it's play history (remember a lot of Region Free scene releases are taken from NTSC source disc and can have a different XEX CRC to the PAL release, even if both are Region Free!)
or other things that would only be possible should the system have been tampered with/modified.
The main thing is to try and do your best to keep off their radar in the first place. It makes me chuckle how many people try playing pre-release games online way before official release date and then try argueing out their console ban on the Xbox Live forums! Strangely they never seem to succeed in getting Microsoft to undo their ban heheh…

Phat Liteon w/LT3.0 updated without reverting to stock. Have not reverted to stock for an update in a long time. Everything seems fine but there is always a risk of being banned always. Its so late in the console cycle that i doubt they will be doing another banwave for things other than idiots playing halo 4 weeks before release (you got what you had coming to you). Everything they went through with the last ban wave was a ton of bad press and money spent on resources to knock peoples xbox's out. As far as the thousand people constantly asking IS IT SAFE TO UPDATE? IS IT SAFE TO PLAY ONLINE? Its never been 100% safe but usually if there is something to worry about or something you should wait for its posted on the main page by Admin or C4. Seeing as there is no real warnings i would say go ahead and update however which way you do it and continue to play. If you dont update and stay offline you are banning yourself. Who knows if C4 will have the time to run a livelog on this small update due to how busy he is with the new PCB and LTU for 1175 drives.

Wait as long as you want you may never get an answer. As for working for microsoft your just plain retarded or havent been doing this very long. Ive been using C4's firmware since its inception and the floods of repetitive comments gets old not just for me but for everyone on here constantly asking the same question over. Every time there has been something questionable or to worry about in a update C4 and admin post people update at your own risk. If you look at the main page like most people should do its says 2.0 , 3.0 , LTU all working fine after update. It doesnt say be careful it , it doesnt possible issue. The dash kernel only changed a couple of points meaning it was just a fix for issues that they already had with the original big update for the season. I was just putting info out there from my experience no has to listen. I was just trying to help. You are the reason people get paranoid about update. If C4 or Admin second guesses the update then so will I. Enjoy playing offline.

To my understanding is that people are to cheap to buy a ihas burner even when they save thousands of dollars burning them. Only Liteons/BenQ can play truncated. I bet you play truncated games and too cheap or more like BROKE! to buy a ihas burner.

No not yet, no Live logs done by c4eva.
The only thing said officially is that everything continues to work as it did before.

As a rule Admin usually post the minute Commodore4eva completes any live-logs etc, and it will probably be announced under it's own topic on the main page (to save everyone from reading through a thousand posts on the original update announcement topic lol).

Funny conspiracy theory…just saw that Xbox is doing a free Gold weekend. What if they issued a seemingly minor update, then lured people online with a free weekend and had somehow exposed a vulnerability and started hitting people with flags and/or bans on custom firmware modified consoles. I'm sure that's not the case, but just a funny conspiracy theory I cooked up. :)

That shouldn't matter you can also get banned having a silver account and signed into Xbox Live. And lets be honest offline player couldn't give a damn about free-xboxlive-gold-weekend. And also, if you are an online gamer you would have Xboxlive gold.So I don't think M$ would use such a cheesy way of getting people banned.

I won't be so sure, sometime the simplest way can be the most effective way. For all we know this could be M$ last attempt to ban custom firmware modified consoles, before the launch of there new console. Its up to online players to have some self control until the all clear siren is sound by C4eva livelog

I have two Xbox 360 phat consoles that were bought at the same time from the same store from the same store shipment delivery, both identical internal board type and drive type (Benq), serial numbers end …xxx4183005 and …xxx4783005 so literally just a few units apart from each other.
I have one modded with LT+3.0 and the other remains untouched from new. My guinnea pig pair you could say lol.

One at a time consecutively we updated these while using a diy cat5 ethernet patch cable (hooked up to pc) for monitoring of traffic between router and console. All data packets were collected and stored to hdd.
The consoles were updated from same dash revisions to the newest, one immediately after the other, with LT+3.0 left on the modified console (did NOT revert this to stock during the update procedure).

Now we have both collections of monitored data packets and have tried to compare them side by side but to be honest i can't enterperate these data packets fully, but both sets seem close to being symetrical with one another. Not perfectly, but close enough to consider taking a stab in the dark by saying that i don't THINK there was any noticeable additional activity between the console and the microsoft server during the update procedure on the LT+3.0 Benq console.
It doesn't mean a lot, especially as not many of you know me and DK or to what degree of knowledge DK and I may or may not have, but i would kind of expect to see a drastic amount of additional activity between server and console should somehow LT+3.0 be detected or the drive interegated durther during the update process, and if that is the case then we don't seem to see such a scenario happening here. Then again, it may just be a slightly different value detected and returned and thus be easily unnoticeable with an attempt at monitoring such as this.
It's not a 'live-log' done, nor is there any definate information discovered here at all, but perhaps this data may be of use to someone else to educate theirselves and try to interpret more than we can at present.
Would love to know the exact method and procedure Commodore uses for doing these 'live-logs'. Perhaps if others were able to do it it could relieve some of the workload from a very busy man indeed lol. Not that everyone would be interested in trusting the word of anyone other than the chap himself ;-)
Perhaps Admin can clarify exactly what is involved in Commodores method of undertaking a 'live-log'…?

great data, thanks. ur right tho its hard to say if the data would be drastically different, or would just one bit be changed in a piece of data, telling M$ that a consoles drive FW is modified. i agree that the live log method would be GREAT for all of us to know so we can do it ourselves and report our findings, altho if i were c4e and came up with a method to run a live log, would i tell ppl how to do it? naaa id love being the only one knowing it lol. but again thanks for the write-up.

alot of people seem confused on what SAFE means here. just because u can update and still play backups simply means that the update hasnt messed with the drive firmware. it does NOT mean M$ hasnt seen the modified firmware and flagged u. the only way to make sure is to wait for c4e's log. if u really need to get on live then just flash back to stock and play OEMs till we hear from c4e. everyone SHOULD be flashed back to stock anyway before updating so whats the difference? u dont have any OEMs then go rent a game or something i dunno. if u are someone who doesnt flash ur own console, and has to send it away to ur flasher and u dont wana mess around with all that, then where do u come off telling c4e to hurry up, or come on here bitching that its taking too long.

All has been good for me so far. Had my son over yesterday and he was quite happily playing Blur online.

I do sense a storm in a teacup here. I suspect if M$ had enough intel, and wanted to fire off a massive banwave they would probably have done it by now.

Anyway, like I say, I hardly ever use my Xbox live membership as I just spen the whole time eating floor.

The ban wave, if there is one, won't happen at least until the the free live weekend is over and MS has had a chance to analyze whatever data they've collected.

Yep pure speculation which is incorrect considering it's not a free LIVE weekend for everyone (The UK don't have free LIVE weekend access). With these theories MS only plan to ban state side? I think not.

      Reply | Reply with Quote
      • avatar Anonymous says:

They may not need to analyze all xbox's, it's probably easier for MS to just collect data from the U.S. They would probably use the results of this "test" and just apply the same data gathered to deterime who to ban worldwide. OR since you're saying the UK doesn't have free LIVE weekend access this weekend, MS might give it to the UK next weekend to continue collecting data from there. But again, this is just speculaton, believe what you want.

My guess is microsoft don't care about a few group of ppl that dont have money to spend on every good game that is released .. instead of that they want us on live to spend other stuff like xbox live arcade games ( just a few ms points ) also dont forget the new xbox is comming next year ?

it is a bad move to ban ppl right now because a biggest group off ppl thinking like me not buy another xbox … Because rumors indicate its better to wait just a few months and play games in offline mode or use alternative multiplayer ways (Xlink kai), while the new xbox system is comming next year..

So i think if m$ do another massive ban wave will loose credit… and gamers to other platforms maybe..

If that was the case, and game developers knew about it. Then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't continue to make games for xbox, which would cause MS to solve the problem. This happened to the PSP, game devs knew their games were being pirated and Sony tried to fix it many times but kept failing until devs just gave up on the PSP

but given the coincidental occurrence of the live weekend and the update, I just believe it safer to be patient and wait rather than to jump on it immediately.

Of course, everyone is entitled to do whatever they want with their own console; it's just my opinion.

People always want something for free at the easiest possible convenience. C4EVA and other modders put a lot of time into this scene and what do they get in return……whining, crying, blaming fools who cannot bare to wait more than a few weeks/months to play their games online for free.

Also this problem that people are too lazy to flash back to stock. Risk it if you want but don't say you weren't warned. Is the effort of flashing your drive back to stock, updating then flashing back more hassle than potentially going to the shop to shell out another £100 for a console.

Wait for LT 3.0 for Hitachi drives
Wait for LiveLog for new dash
Flash back to stock before updating

Easy enough to do for the patient among us.

    I agree – it's a service; not free.

And it's not so people without money can play games .. it's for people to play backups of the games "they have already purchased".

the chief modder in my part of the world who works with TX told me tonight that nobody has been banned in over 2 years because of updating to a newer dash revision and that I should go ahead and update. As long as games haven't been played way before release and everything is patched sufficiently, it should be fine.

I still haven't updated though. But for those of you wondering, this is perhaps the best thing available at the moment until a livelog surfaces.

Please before disliking and deleting this message, i'm probably going to say the exact same thing that everybody else is saying, but i just want to say that i think it's a bad thing that there still isn't any sign from c4eva about the last system update. I mean the firmware will probably not be in danger but I think the safety is a top priority. So the only thing i'm asking for is an answer why there still isn't a livelog on the small system update from last week?
I know LTU is almost done for release but if c4eva would just take some minutes to do the livelog, I think that it would take alot of pressure away because the people stop asking for a livelog. This is just my opinion and i hope you all understand and that this will let c4eva do a livelog for all of us that want to know if we are in danger or not.

    Thankyou all for your time!
    C4EVA <3

It's like this. Don't you think C4 has our best interest at heart? He is constantly working on firmware that is Xbox Live safe. He does live logs when he gets the chance. How do you know he isn't doing one right now? That's right, you don't. He will take care of us. If there was any chance of us getting banned, don't you think he would be the first to inform us? He wants his stuff to be right so we don't lose faith in his and his team's work. What if he rushed through something and caused bans? would you still buy TX products or would you second guess the purchase. He is doing everything right from a business point of view. He hasn't let us down yet and none of us should expect him to. If he hasn't posted anything, it's because there is nothing to post.

Do you know how long it takes to write firmware or do livelogs? No insult was intended, but it is what is. The things he and his team do are treasured and asking them to hurry is like telling the bomb squad to hurry up and just cut a wire. Without being 100% sure, BOOM!!! Patience and the answers will come.

except that the guys over at flashxbox360 added the words "safe" to your original post; probably without any supporting evidence either.

So what you are saying is, that it's safe to update?

        Reply | Reply with Quote

Yeah well there could be a reason that c4eva is always slow at giving out info. And that is that Microsoft most certainly monitors this site to see what c4eva does next. So C4 doesn't give away too much info until the time is right. Well that's just my theory anyway.

For all the people that didn't see the message from Admin about the LIVE Log, right on the top of this page it's pinned. He said that usually after the basic tests they can already see if the firmware got detected or the drive got changed. This doesn't mean the update is 100% safe. This can only be done by doing the livelog. If you got more questions you can ofcourse ask the admin i'm not from this site but i would love to help you guys so the admin can take break when people ask things about the safety about this update, because it's simple! Solong there is no LIVELog on an update there is no 100% sure about the safety. ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED :D

Just signed up for a trial ($5 for the first month) of Gamefly, and Black Ops II shipped already. That should hold me over for a while :)

FYI, I did it AND got a free Registration Code for FlashFXP by signing up for Gamefly via TrialPay (it's on FlashFXP's website). Feels good to finally have a legit FlashFXP registration instead of the sketchy pirated versions (usually from the keygen's and their antivirus false-positives) after all of these years!

Lol, I forgot the majority of you people probably don't have a Jtag system as well as one for Live… You would need an FTP program if you did (as well as for about a million other things)…

The point of my post though was the suggestion of getting GameFly for a retail copy of the game cheap in the meantime while waiting for C4Eva….

Doesn't make a s**t of difference if you're still running your retail games on a console that's flashed with LT+.

That's why I flashed back to stock like it's recommended you do for all updates. Hey do what you want, I'm just saying for $5 I'm going to be playing safely on live today.

EB Games has a no questions asked 7 day refund policy on everything here – so there's no need to pay $5 when it's free

First, that's a different level of "unethical-ness"… Second, it's only good for 7 days, hopefully C4Eva does give the all clear within a week. But I've got 30 days just in case… And even if he takes as long as 4 months, I can still save some money.

This is the first time I've ever bought a full year of XBL (about a month ago), I'd like to be able to actually use it… For $5 this is clearly a better option then a 7 day return policy from EB Games. But have fun with that…

I think you just created a new word bro lol.

Just be careful when you send back your games because there's a few reviews for gamefly saying that they sent the games back and the company claims to have never received them, forcing people to pay for replacements. Whether that's true or not I have no idea but it's definitely something to keep in mind when you decide to return your rentals man.

Depending on what drive you have, you will prolly have to update to LT+ 3.0. See which drive you have and look at the list on the main page. The most up to date firmware is listed for each drive.
