Xbox LIVE Dashboard Update 2.0.16203.0 Rolling Out *UPDATED*

This morning, Microsoft has begun rolling out a new SystemUpdate that brings the Xbox 360 dashboard/kernel version to 2.0.16203.0.

Although there has been no official word from Microsoft yet, it's likely this update addresses a minor issue or small change as evidenced by the single digit increment in version number over the last update.

After updating, LT+ v3.0 and LTU v1.0 continue to work fine with backups both offline and on Xbox LIVE. Xk3y also continues to function without issue on LIVE and offline.

Check back here on c4evaSpeaks.com for official word from c4eva once he's done a LIVE log for this update.

P.S. Quit being such gullible fools and regurgitating the nonsense from Wikipedia every time an update comes out.

*UPDATE* [2013-02-20 06:29PM UTC]
Whoops. I missed the tweet yesterday from Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson (Larry Hryb), confirming our assumption that it was a minor change:

"Xbox LIVE System update out today. No big changes just an update to default settings that will only be visible to certain users in the EU."

Also, for those asking in the comments, yes, LT v2.01 and LT+ v2.0 continue to work fine after the update as well.

Well look at it this way. If M$ can't detect firmware mods, what's the best way to find modded consoles? Leak big ticket games a month early and find the idiots who play them!

No because my friend and I both get legit copies of the game early, and MS knows that people get the legit copy early. They don't flag anybody for playing early. I played CoD:BO2, Halo 4, CoD:MW3 and MW2 early (2-3 weeks) and I've never gotten banned.

That is wrong. Me and most of my friends Played Halo 4 pre release and are not flagged. Yes I have even checked. Therefore not everyone will get banned for GOWJ. Also I even played the Multiplayer with other people and am not flagged.

My family run a small game store. We receive new release titles early on a regular basis. Deliveries often arrive several days, sometimes a week ahead of schedule. We are under instruction NOT to sell any copies before the designated release dates but noone ever seems to enforce this (we have never been questioned not once in six years) but there are many stores that do not comply with this request and sell/ship titles early.
Even major UK retailers such as TESCO and ASDA often send out their pre-order titles early if the shipment has arrived.
Playing titles a few days early is often/mostly completely overlooked or disregarded by Microsoft XBL-PET (Xbox Live Policy Enforcement Team staff) because they know that there are high chances of perfectly legitimate retail discs ending up in the hands of the perfectly innocent consumer a few days early on a large scale. It would be damaging to their customer base if they were to ban innocent gamers and obviously they try to avoid this, hence why every "ban" is looked into independantly and thoroughly (apparently) and the decision made on various criteria and apparent evidence.
The issue of playing pre-release date only really becomes a problem when people are playing games several weeks before release, or titles that they know haven't even shipped out to stores yet, such was the case with HALO 4 (and will most likely will be with Gears of War: Judgement too).
Also, these titles are some of Microsoft Studio's biggest gaming franchises so they will certainly be concerned by the "one month early" leak and be taking action on it. It's their product and in their interests to protect it as an investment.
Non Microsoft titles are more likely to be left to the discretion of their relative companies, who may ban a gamer's access to their servers until release date etc but this doesn't elliminate the fact Microsoft can still ban early play of such releases.
There are so many variables and possible scenarios, there may never be any set answer regarding bans but general advice is don't play any title before release date (obviously lol!) but in general you can get away with a few days early. Big major releases will obviously carry a higher risk.

im not saying your wrong…but if you play a game offline then go online AFTER release date how can they know you've played it early? if your not on live doesnt your time and date reset back to 2005?(might be wrong there) so tecnically all games played offline would look like you've played early??

It is my understanding that achievements and the like are time-stamped. If you've "earned" achievements before the game was even available to the public, logic dictates Microsoft would know that the console is modded.

          Reply | Reply with Quote
          • avatar DMacG says:

You can set the date and time yourself though. So if you NEVER went online between playing a pre-release and its release, there's no way they could know exactly when you earned the achievement. If you did go online during that time, though not playing the early game, presumably your achievements would be synced which might earn you a ban.
BUT I'm wondering what if you used a different profile for playing the early game offline? Would that profile sync even if you signed out before going online?

        • avatar Sausages McGee says:

With achievements earned offline the time stamp is ignored/disregarded.
Achievements earned whilst logged into Xbox Live servers are time-stamped.
So basically people who think they can edit the system time and date and play without being detected are wrong.

How do you know the game works if you haven't put it in your console and tested it?
"not that stupid"…hmmm, not so sure.
And for idiots still thinking that they can play leaked games offline or on a blank/offline profile think again, ALL game info gets stored in the nand and gets uploaded to MS as soon as an XBL account signs in. This includes info from all local profiles, whether XBL gold or not.
      When are people gonna learn????

All info stored on the nand, lol!!! Ummmm…….. no!
That was good for a laugh though!
As for me, how about a live console and a glitched console for all pre-released games!
Easy way to know it works but not tested it on live…..
And do yourself a favor and buy some games here and there, give your favorite devs some support!
C4E is awesome, but has made it too easy for all these kids these days to burn their own and troll the forums with "is it safe?? Is it safe?????" questions. Ugh…

Stop trying to play yourself off as knwoing what you are on about and get back to noobland where you belong. And give yourself a blue peter badge for realising that having a console that never goes online will avoid a ban. Captain fkin obvious strikes again!!

Really?? That is one of the most uninformed posts I have ever seen! Why don't you try researching your info before you spread your stupidity around here! No game data is stored in the nand at all.

Again, research it, it has been proven ya idiot! Check xecuter forums and more specificly by MartinC and many others.

The concept, that is pretty clear yet hard for you to understand, is to have two consoles. A glitch for installed pre-releases and a live system. I hoped that helped, holding your hand for a simple 2 + 2 problem.
Yes it is obvious that I will never get a ban since I never play a pre on my live console.

Please stop trying to infect everyone with your stupidity by spreading uninformed "facts" sarcastixx, people here will read and run with it. You are one of the leading causes to blinding these noobs and leading them to ignorance!

          • avatar QuickMythril says:

i have also heard that a record of played games was stored in the nand. which is why people usually say playing a game offline doesn't make any difference.

          • avatar ZzzZzzZzzZ says:

Many intelligent people in the scene have proven that it is in fact not stored in the nand.
The main problem is when you play and get achievements, they are stored on the HDD and uploaded when you go back on live.
The nand is a small flash memory where the system dashboard and kernel are stored. It holds your system key, etc.
It would have way too much crap to wade through if it were to log info of every game you played, every time you played, and every achievement you received. Imagine how many files would be there for a hard core gamer over the last six years!
Nand flash .bins are always the exact same size as well, and there is no filler or garbage data.
The nand is also generally in a read only state, unless prompted to be read/write like during an update.
I encourage anyone to use google and look around on the subject, all it will do is help you understand what not to do and avoid a ban.
Just don't listen to other idiots that run around here posting their uneducated garbage that they swear is fact, since they heard it some where some time. Noobs like that are the worst as they keep wrong information in circulation.

          • avatar QuickMythril says:

i must've just heard someone say "stored on your xbox" and assumed the nand, but it would make a lot more sense that the "recently played" is a part of your profile, which is stored separately. still makes me wonder about the old days before the big block nands, did you have to have one of those memory units to create a profile? also i felt like it would log even if you were not signed into a profile. maybe i am just thinking that it logs something like a failed ap2.5 challenge offline, which would then be submitted when you connect.

          • avatar ZzzZzzZzzZ says:

That is correct. Before the big block nands, there was no way to create and save a profile. Lol, I remember those days….
Then the big blocks came. They had a larger nand that had a partition that created a built in memory card.
Failed ap 2.5, or wrong pfi, ss or dmi responces could have been stored in the nand possibly or even the profile which was then input in the secdata.
When it comes down to it, no one really knows except MS. Otherwise we would have it down to a science!
I only laughed the first time (a month ago) since it gave us all a good laugh when the theory was first introduced (long ago), given who started the rumor too.

If your friends are on your list then that means they obviously have an XBL account.
Playing an early release without a connection wont save any profile, whether XBL enabled or not.

Wait until the next ban wave and see if your console will connect to Live. And then come back be and post "Why is my console and Live account banned?! What is this TOS and COC policy they keep sending to my e-mail?". I can't wait for your reaction. =)

"Dont know Jack". Goes both ways. You played H4 early like a fool, so whether you got banned or not is irrelevant. You went against common sense and the widespread reports of the MS threat to perma ban early release players. Not any more..Xval is now redundant since the 16197 kernel update so without some serious knowledge of the security sector hash codes then there is no way of knowing, but I suppose getting your XBL account whacked by MS would be a good way of telling!

But the same questions asked back to back like a bunch of toddlers asking where babys come from every time an update comes out should stop. You know the answer before you even ask. Its annoying.

My advice would be to wait and see what the results are. More than likely from what i've read is that it's not a major update and it's to fix some minor bugs. I updated and did go online for about an hour, i also have original games but not risking playing those either.

Hope atleast this helps you because when i asked a question i just got loads of abuse.

Really? So what do you think the replay sector data is for then. This is needed to answer any AP challenges correctly. LT2 for samsungs and early hitachis have no ap checks, but the rest do.You really need to be more specific!

i'm confused :S they're saying that the firmware 'works' offline and online after the update… but is that the same thing as saying that it's *confirmed* that we *won't* be flagged for a ban if we do so?? i'm not interested in only whether or not it "works". Can the mods of this site please be a little more specific in your wording? Please? :S

Ok, lets assume that "safe" in this case means you want to be 100% sure to not get banned: in this case the update is NOT YET safe. -> do not update

Its an easy drill: MS updates their software and there is a slight chance it detects that your drive is modded which will result in a ban. C4eva will check wherether the software detects it or not. When he knows the outcome he'll post it here stating it is safe or not. Untill now noone knows if the update gets you banned.

So just to be clear, is it safe?: No! (Not yet)

Well he said according to firmware itself it wont get you banned so it's just your fault of having bad rips, playing early, not using abxg360.. so it is SAFE but i wouldn't really go play newer games..

It has been known for a while that MS can run a check on the "pictures" that get used in the Mixed Media Disc process when using ISOMenu. They match the media tag metadata with known p2p and scene release ISO files for a match. As the xk3y itself is still undetectable the media tags alone are not exactly proof so they cant get away with banning without knowing for definite. Just remember to update to the new dash in passthru mode and you should be fine.

I have not updated yet. But I can confirm I've been playing games early offline for years. Set your Xbox date to the release date play it offline. I sign into live same day as release and I'm golden. If you really wanna play gears play it. Just don't expect to be able to sign into live before release date. It's not difficult.

Welcome to every update for the last few years. Rather annoying how these all fill up with 100+ posts and prob 80+% asking the same question. "is it safe" "Will I get banned" Or my favorite while waiting for the 2.0 and then 3.0 "IS XXX almost done yet?! I need an answer NOW" and then eventually cursing c4eva out stating he's lazy incompetent etc etc. People get inpatient waiting for cfw that is developed by one person as they aren't able to do it themselves. I would think C4eva doesn't read these post cause if it were me and I read all the bs some of these clowns post I would prob tell them to sit and spin and either start charging or just say forget it all together.

This is more out of curiosity than anything, but:

Aside from checking whether or not everything functions normally (I'm not going to pretend to understand how), do the logs show any other information? I guess specifically, is there some part of the log that will show whether or not an Xbox is "tagged" for a ban later down the line? Again, I've just been wondering this out of curiosity and if it's some top secret code, then I certainly don't need to know it.

Holy hell people! Can you read C4eva's only comment on the matter? It says "It's being investigated." This means he isn't 100% sure. If you want to update, flash back to stock, update, then play offline. If you want to risk it, update online and keep at it. The update is available on Microsoft's website. Put it on a flash drive and update offline. One of the remaining mysteries is whether or not Microsoft can read your drive firmware during an update. If you update offline, this shouldn't be a problem. If this homepage doesn't say it's safe, then don't update. Damn, asking the same question 500 times doesn't make it happen any faster! STFU!

Best way to go forward is to have two machines .Buy an old Xbox, get it rgh for £50 then load on fsd and play all the new games including the new gears of war weeks before being released via system link . You can even use a banned machine on fsd via an FTP connection and don't have to pay for Xbox live . Waiting for c4eva so you can update your Xbox live machine becomes more bearable if you can still go online .

Well I thought maybe the update & GOWJ were associated soon after reading what Major Nelly stated on his blog. I think the message was a warning to certain users in the EU as an attempt to catch anyone playing early because of the spoiler videos, but if that be the case why force the update on everyone worldwide? And why not simply force the update and deal with it? What action has been taken other than their 'big blog' announcement? GOWJ has now been officially released, and how many reported bans has there been after any changes?

in regards to the "console can't play until payments are up to date" see this forum thread: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/7/p/454054/2259690.aspx

basically that is an xbox that was sold at a discount with a requirement of having purchased an xbox live gold subscription. if you bought it used you were scammed. if that is your own console and you stopped paying, there is probably no way to "reset" it, since it's been online and it's known by the serial number. it is basically banned. you might be able to resolve the issue by calling xbox support and paying off the balance.
